SOUTH KOREA: The escalation of tensions between North and South Korea is not quite on the market's radar screen, but rather just off to the side. The thinking is that this may not be just the usual saber rattling by NK leader Kim Jong Un. CNN (TWX) notes that verbal warnings on both sides have been flying back and forth Friday, ahead of Saturday, when NK has imposed a deadline for SK to turn off propaganda broadcasts or face war. NK state media, already Thursday night that the country was getting closer to "the brink of war," CNN (TWX) says, quoting Ji Jae Ryong, NK ambassador to China. The latest from YonHap News says the United Nations Command (UNC) proposed Thursday to have working level talks with North Korea to discuss escalating tensions, but the country has not responded, the military source says. Korean stocks and the won slipped Friday, with FX spillover effects on other currencies. Morgan Stanley (MS) strategists note that "A weak China PMI and headlines from North Korea on military escalation further increased the risk-off sentiment around Korea, driving JPY/KRW above 9.7 for the first time since Oct 2014." JPY/KRW holds at Krw9.7789 currently, after trading in a Krw9.5984/9.7920 range.
