  • ICE Grain/Oilseed Review: Canola Rises Further on Spillover Gains

    WINNIPEG--Intercontinental Exchange canola futures continued higher Wednesday, getting more spillover from gains in other edible oils. The Chicago soy complex saw soyoil push well over two cents per bushel in the nearby contracts, while soybeans had double- digit gains and soymeal was up moderately. The rally in European rapeseed carried on and there were increases in Malaysian palm oil.

    Intercontinental Exchange canola futures continued to push higher at midday Wednesday, getting support from increases in other edible oils, according to an analyst. He noted that Chicago soyoil shot up sharply so far today, with European rapeseed still on the rise along with gains in Malaysian palm oil. Canola was also being supported by tight supplies and this year's production coming in far below earlier expectations.

Canada's tight supply situation contributed to the firmer tone, although canola is said to be looking overpriced at current levels.

  • Antofagasta Expects Copper Production to Fall in 2022

    Antofagasta PLC (ANFGF) on Wednesday forecast lower copper production for 2022, reflecting a lack of rainfall and lower grades at its Centinela Concentrates operation. The Chilean copper miner guided for production of 660,000-690,000 metric tons for next year. This would be down from the 2021 guidance of 710,000-740,000 tons, which was reiterated on Wednesday.

    WINNIPEG, Manitoba--Intercontinental Exchange canola futures were stronger on Tuesday due to ongoing concerns about tight supplies and dry conditions across the Prairies. A trader commented the rolling out of the November contract into January was a major feature in today's trading. He added that crushers and other buyers are worried about the small amount of canola available on the market and are buying as much as they can.

Intermonth spreading was a feature, as traders are busy rolling out of the front month ahead of its expiry. Chicago Board of Trade soyoil futures were softer in early activity, which put some spillover pressure on canola.

Canada's tight supply situation was also supportive, although a broker noted that demand was already being rationed at current price levels.
