U.S. Treasury net shorts trimmed on front end, up for some longer-dated bonds - CFTC

NEW YORK, June 24 (Reuters) - Speculators trimmed their net
bearish bets on U.S. Treasury five-year note futures to their
lowest since September 2021 in the latest week, but increased
bearish bets in other parts of the curve, Commodity Futures
Trading Commission data showed on Friday.
The amount of speculators' bearish, or short, positions in
five-year Treasury futures exceeded bullish, or long, positions
by 104,091 contracts the week ending on June 21.
Speculators' bearish bets on U.S. Treasury two-year note
futures, which reflect possible interest rate
moves by the Federal Reserve, were also trimmed, to 119,283
contracts from 160,422 the prior week.
This followed an interest rate increase by the U.S. Central
bank on June 15 which was the largest rise in nearly three
decades and came in the wake of a hotter-than-expected U.S.
inflation report for May.
Bearish bets on some longer-dated U.S. Treasury note
futures, however, expanded.
U.S. 10-year note futures' net shorts expanded
to 228,184 contracts, and net shorts on U.S. ultra-long bonds
expanded to 345,056 contracts, the highest since
July 2020, according to CFTC data.
